Cons in Finland

Finland is a small northern country with not just a huge SF/F fandom, but also huge comics, gaming, and anime/manga fandoms—all of which, to a large degree, overlap. Here are some of the larger events we have been organizing within the past.

Tampere March 26-30 2014

The annual Tampere Kuplii comic book festival is organized in Tampere and focuses on all types of comic books. The program consists of presentations, speeches, panel discussions and interviews. A lot of comic books are published during the festival. The expected attendance is around 7000 people. Tampere Kuplii comic book festival has no membership fee.

Mariehamn May 1-4, 2014

Åcon is an annual science fiction convention, held in May or June every year in Mariehamn, Åland. It was founded in 2007 with the goal of bringing Swedish and Finnish science fiction fandom together, and described as being a literary relaxacon with all programming in English. While a few of the participants are Ålanders, the majority travel from mainland Finland and Sweden for the convention.

Jyväskylä July 11-13, 2014

Finncon is the largest science fiction & fantasy literature event in Finland and Nordic countries. Finncon is free to attend! This year our theme is micro and macro cosmoses. Finncon 2014 is the 20th Finncon, so we have a big celebration ahead! Our program includes lectures, panels, science program, quizzes, parties, cosplay, writers program, researcher meeting and loads more.

Espoo May 15-17, 2015

The purpose of Ropecon is to promote, build up and improve roleplaying -, collectible card gaming-, boardgaming- and miniaturegaming in Finland. To realise its purpose, the association organises roleplaying convention Ropecon every summer. It's the largest non-commercial roleplaying convention in Europe with more than 3000 visitors each year. It's a three day convention held in late June or early August in Dipoli conference center in Espoo. Ropecon offers different programs and activities covering the role-playing game field including, not only both tabletop and larp, but also board games, miniatures and collectible card games. The program contains games, tournaments, lectures, panels and workshops. In order to support the event, the association collects an entrance fee from the visitors.

Lahti June 5-7, 2015

Desucon is a Finnish convention for the fans of Japanese animation and comics. Since it was first organised in June 2009, the annual Desucon has been continuosly ranked among the finest of Finnish anime and manga conventions. Events featured include lectures and presentations, cosplay, maid café, artists' alley, dealers' room, game corner and video screenings. Desucon has also hosted numerous Japanese guests ranging from seiyuus and singers to mangakas, lecturers and directors.

Åland June 25-28, 2015

Archipelacon is this year’s big event in the Nordic countries for everyone interested in science fiction and fantasy. It’s a four-day celebration of the fantastic arts in the new Culture & Conference Centre Alandica by the seaside in Mariehamn, Åland. Archipelacon will offer you several programme tracks with presentations, panels and lectures on all aspects of science fiction and fantasy. The main language will be English, but there will be programme tracks also in Finnish and Swedish. The convention will also host the Finnish SF and Fantasy Researchers Network’s annual academic conference. Archipelacon will be a meeting place for science fiction and fantasy fans from all over the world, an international convention with a Nordic flavour.

Helsinki July 30 - August 02, 2014

ASSEMBLY events are the largest and most respected "demo-scene" events in the world. Assembly has a stunning history from year 1992 onwards and we expect over 5000 visitors from all over the world to join the event and the competitions. These pages are directed for the press and media.
